Got Migraines? You Might Need to Be Screened for a Stroke

Strokes can be devastating and debilitating, so prevention is paramount. Yet, to ward off a stroke you need to know you’re at risk. For young adults, those risk factors can look very different than they do when you’re older.

For a study published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, researchers combed through data from the Colorado All Payer Claims Database, looking at how traditional and nontraditional risk factors affect stroke risk in those 55 years and younger. They examined data from 2,628 stroke cases and 7,827 controls.

What they found is that for adults between 18 to 34 years of age, nontraditional risk factors were more likely to cause a stroke than traditional ones. The two most frequent culprits include migraines and thrombophilia, a condition that increases the likelihood of blood clotting. For men, another nontraditional risk factor includes kidney failure. For women, it’s malignancy. The association is so strong that the researchers recommend that young patients with these conditions undergo stroke screenings to monitor their risk.

Researchers did note that the study had some limitations, such as not accounting for uncoded diagnoses or those who didn’t seek medical care. Plus, the study was conducted from a database in Colorado and the higher altitude may have potentially impacted the results.

Heart Disease Linked with Eating Too Much Sodium

While sodium is necessary for good health, eating too much can disrupt the fluid balance in your body—raising your blood pressure and worsening conditions like heart failure. A recent study presented at the American College of Cardiology’s Annual Scientific Session revealed that individuals with cardiovascular disease (CVD) consume more than double the recommended daily allowance of sodium.

For this study, researchers analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Study (NHANES), which included people diagnosed with heart attack, stroke, coronary artery disease, heart failure, or coronary artery disease. They estimated each participant’s sodium intake by reviewing questionnaires documenting their food consumption over 24 hours.

The results revealed that among the more than 3,100 individuals with cardiovascular disease, 89% were consuming more than the 1,500 mg daily recommended limit for people with heart disease. Plus, most were eating more than double the safe daily limit.

The researchers acknowledged that the sodium intake was determined based on food recall questionnaires rather than 24-hour sodium measurements, which are considered the "gold standard." However, they stressed the need for increased education to emphasize the importance of limiting sodium, especially for those with heart concerns.

5 Unexpected Benefits of Anaerobic Exercise

If you lift weights, do pushups, or take part in high-intensity interval training (HIIT), you’re doing an anaerobic exercise, meaning one that doesn’t require oxygen to break down glucose. With anaerobic exercises, your muscles contract faster than your body can generate oxygen, so your body burns the glucose that’s already in your muscles. Adding anaerobic exercises to your routine can help to burn fat, support healthy bones, lift your mood, and more. (More)

Don’t Nap Without Doing This!

If you love to nap, here’s good news! Taking an afternoon snooze can improve your performance, enhance learning, and even help to lower your blood pressure. The trick is to limit your naps to just 10-20 minutes–so never snooze without setting an alarm. This is just enough time to enter the first, and maybe second, stages of sleep so you wake up refreshed and not groggy. Plus, shorter naps won’t interfere with your nighttime sleep. (More)

Should You Add Protein Powder to Your Coffee?

Social media is filled with people adding protein powder to their coffee, calling it “proffee.” Influencers claim this is a great way to increase your protein intake, boost energy levels, enhance concentration, and even aid weight loss. Yet, some experts caution that adding protein powder to your coffee could impact the absorption of antioxidants and caffeine found in coffee. Plus, it adds extra calories to your diet and can alter the taste of your morning brew. (More)

A Lack of Sleep Can Make You Feel Years Older

You know a lack of sleep can affect your health and now research suggests sleep deprivation may also impact how old you feel. In a study published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B., researchers found that people who were deprived of sleep for just a few nights felt an average of four years older than their biological age. On the converse, getting consistent high-quality sleep can make you feel years younger. (More)

Constipation During Menopause? You’re Not Alone

Perimenopause, the precursor to menopause, can cause hot flashes, mood swings, and difficulties sleeping. Now, we can add another symptom to that list, constipation. During perimenopause, estrogen levels decline while levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) spike—slowing gut motility and digestion. Here’s how to keep things moving as they should. (More)

Your Skincare Routine May Be Making You Look Older

Retinol is a lab-made chemical derivative of vitamin A, and it’s one of the hottest ingredients in skincare right now.

But this trendy new chemical also has serious drawbacks that may actually CAUSE premature signs of aging.

For example, retinol can also make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, and because one of the biggest accelerators for skin aging is sun damage, long-term use of retinol may do more harm than good for your skin.

The bottom line? IGNORE THE HYPE.

But retinol is just one of thousands of chemicals you might find on the shelves of your local skincare aisle, so how are you supposed to know which ones are safe (and which ones you actually DO want to use instead)?
